Architectural competition

In 2015 the museum held a planning-and-design competition between three architectural firms (after an initial pre-qualification round involving 57 proposals). With the project ‘Meeting in Old Stavanger’, Eder Biesel Arkitekter won out over Snøhetta and KAP Arkitekter AS.

In ‘Meeting in Old Stavanger’, the winning architects emphasise creating a new and exciting meeting place for visitors and neighbours in Old Stavanger. The aim is to create a vital and engaging museum in a historic location.

The new museum will be installed in purpose-built premises located in the backyard of the Norwegian Canning Museum. Eder Biesel’s proposal shows good insight into the on-site situation and its urban context, with modern architecture interacting with the historic environment.

The competition was organised through collaboration with the National Association of Norwegian Architects.

Competition results were made public on 9 March 2015. Read the jury’s report in its entirely (pdf, NO).
